Maintaining Momentum

Is your organization long on great ideas but short on follow-through? The inability to maintain momentum on any given initiative seems to be a common challenge for businesses and nonprofits alike. One of our favorite books, “The Knowing-Doing Gap” by Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton addresses this pervasive phenomenon. "You're likely to find talk substituting for action," they write, "when no follow-up is done to ensure that what was said is actually done.” One solution to the knowing-doing gap, they say, is to use simple language to describe learning and action.

As the year rapidly draws to a close, make it a point to identify and implement at least three strategies to keep your good work moving forward with renewed purpose and vigor. We've provided the articles below, "Are You for Real?" and "What Gets Measured", to give you a little inspiration.

Keep It Simple

Developing authentic, jargon-free messages is an approach that NewLevel Group Consultant, Kathryn Nudelman, recommends in her article, “Are You for Real?” That’s not to say that you have to reveal the skeletons in your closet, just leave the door open.

Measuring What Matters

As Albert Einstein once observed, "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." In his article, “What Gets Measured”, John Heymann suggests that subjective measurements are just as important as quantifiable metrics.
